Objective
The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Southeast Asia with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related PhD studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and / or research at a higher education institution in Southeast Asia.
Who can apply?
The target group for scholarships are graduates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, East Timor, Thailand or Vietnam with a Master’s degree if applying for a doctoral programme who want to pursue PhD courses at one of the partner institutions of SEARCA (UPLB or UPM).
What can be funded?
The In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme supports studies in subject areas with strong relevance to national development.

- UPLB: PhD - Food Science (Nutritional, Domestic and Food Sciences)
- UPM: PhD - Food Science/Food Science and Technology (Nutritional, Domestic and Food Sciences)
Duration of the funding
The scholarships are awarded for the duration of the standard period of study for the chosen programme (generally up to three years).
Value
The scholarship includes a monthly scholarship, travel allowance (In-Region scholarships only), printing allowance, study and research allowance, tuition fees.
Selection
The application must be made in two steps:
- First step, all applicants must submit a complete application for the programme via the DAAD Portal.
- Regardless of this first step, applicants must at the same time apply for admission at SEARCA using the contact details and procedure prescribed by the institution.
The institution sets its own deadline for the admission process. Please inform yourself in plenty of time about the application process at the host institution.
