ကြိုဆိုပါတယ် – Welcome – မင်္ဂလာပါ

In Myanmar, the DAAD primarily supported hitherto the higher education reform process. However, since the military coup of February 1, 2021 the potential activities of DAAD and the German universities in Myanmar are very limited now. But the DAAD wants to continue its academic cooperation with universities in Myanmar and keep contact with partners there, as far as it is possible.

Right now, it looks like the reform process of the universities in Myanmar cannot be continued after the coup. The universities will again be under strict control of the military and the authorities. In the moment, the universities are mostly closed, also due to the Corona pandemic.

Despite this difficult situation, the DAAD will continue to offer its scholarship programmes especially for young researchers, future university lecturers and for academically trained specialists and managers from the practice. Training courses for university managers have been in high demand from universities in Myanmar. The DAAD will continue to responded to this need with its DIES programmes.

During the last years, more and more German universities were focusing their attention on Myanmar and entering into cooperation agreements. The DAAD supported these activities among others by a fact-finding mission of German universities to Myanmar in 2018. Some of the cooperation projects between universities in both countries are supported by DAAD funding programmes.

From 2018 until 2020, the DAAD supported a long-term lectureship at Yangon University of Education in the field of education.

Alumni of German universities in Myanmar

There are around 700 alumni of German universities in Myanmar who until the military coup have been successfully employed in the fields of science, business and politics. They are the ideal contacts for anyone interested in pursuing higher education studies or research in Germany. The alumni have joined to form the German Alumni Association Myanmar (GAAM). The GAAM held an alumni seminar on a specific subject every year with DAAD support.
