DAAD Lecturers

© DAAD Vietnam
In addition to Regional Offices and Information Centres, the DAAD is represented around the world by its Lecturers. In Vietnam, there are Lecturers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and in Laos in Vientiane.

The Lecturers and language assistants funded by the DAAD deliver German as a Foreign Language courses, teacher training and German linguistics and literature classes.

Besides their teaching activities at language centres and in German departments at universities, they also provide valuable information about study opportunities in Germany, scholarship programmes and academic exchange in general. They are often the first point of contact for students and academics who are interested in studying or carrying out research at a German university. The Lecturers therefore act as an important link between Vietnamese and German universities.

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology was founded in 1956 and is considered the country’s leading technical university with more than 35,000 students and doctoral candidates in 160 study programs. HUST cooperates with 200 universities, research institutes and companies in research and training from 32 countries. In Germany, these include TU Dresden, TU Darmstadt, Leibniz University Hannover, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, University of Stuttgart, University of Leipzig and TU Munich. At HUST alone, more than 100 DAAD/Germany alumni are involved as lecturers or researchers.

The Vietnamese-German Center (VDZ) was founded in 1999 with German support to promote bilateral exchange and cooperation between Vietnam and Germany in training and scientific research. More than 400 people are currently attending the evening courses at the VDZ, and prospective nursing staff are also being taught. Most of the lecturers lived, studied or conducted research in Germany themselves.

Since October 2023, there is a full-time DAAD lecturer working at HUST. The lecturer’s tasks include planning and conducting language courses and oral exams at levels A1-B1 for students in the exchange and master program within the framework of the cooperation between the HUST and the Leibniz University Hannover. There is great interest: in 2024, almost 200 students started at level A1, and a total of around 400 students are attending the German courses. In addition, TestDaF and TestAS exams are held several times a year at the VDZ; in 2023, over 500 people took the TestAS and more than 100 people took the TestDaF. Furthermore, the OnSET language test is offered every year. The DAAD lecturer, acting as the examination officer, is responsible for organizing and conducting these exams. Additionally, various events such as study entrance ceremonies or annual meetings are organized, with the lecturer engaged in the planning. There is also great interest in training courses and workshops for teachers and students and in other extracurricular activities like a German club currently running.

VNU Hanoi is ranked as one the country’s top universities and one of the best higher education institutions in Southeast Asia. Accordingly, the Faculty of German Language and Culture at VNU-ULIS Hanoi is the only German department in Vietnam that offers not only two undergraduate programs (German Language Studies and German Language Teaching), but also a Master’s program (German Linguistics). Since 2017 it is able to offer even a binational M. A. (German as a Foreign and Second Language in the Vietnamese-German context) with the University of Leipzig. In the field of German language studies this is the first double Master’s degree program in Southeast Asia.

The department maintains intensive and fruitful co-operations with several higher education institutions in Germany (University of Leipzig, University of Greifswald, Konstanz University of Applied Sciences and TU Dortmund University) as well as with all relevant German institutions in Vietnam (German Embassy, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Robert Bosch Foundation, Goethe Institute and Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA)). In addition, it collaborates with many other German departments not only in Vietnam, but in the whole region Southeast Asia.

As a member of a dedicated, well qualified and professional teaching staff, the DAAD Lecturer in this department runs various kinds of courses both for undergraduate and graduate students. These are seminars on e.g. “Research Methods”, “Intercultural Communication”, “German Literature”, “Literature and Media”, “Pragmatics” and “German Studies”. As the curricula of the department are constantly modernized, the tasks of the DAAD Lecturer include curriculum development and the creation of suitable teaching material. Other areas of responsibility are supervising master and bachelor theses in the fields of literature, pragmatics and intercultural communication, reviewing master exposés and theses, involvement in examination committees and in the selection of scholarship recipients as well as teacher training. In addition, the DAAD Lecturer supports the department in both initiating and maintaining international co-operations, in hosting events like e.g. the biannual International German Teachers’ Conference of the Vietnamese German Teachers’ Association and in editing publications like e.g. textbooks and conference proceedings.

The job as DAAD Lecturer at VNU-ULIS Hanoi is a both challenging and rewarding one. Due to the dynamic development of the department’s international co-operations it also provides a widespread range of further training opportunities.

Hanoi University is considered to be the most traditional and also largest university where the German language is taught in Vietnam. A DAAD Lecturer needs to be prepared for a wide range of university courses as well as being ready for various work experiences. A DAAD Lecturer has to be able to teach several language courses as well as regularly giving seminars. The lecturer must also be involved in the examination process, the supervision of coursework and several examination projects. The main courses are annually attended by about 100 students. All 18 teachers work with the utmost motivation to offer their students the best possible language training.

The “German Studies Department” already has a long-term partnership with the University of Giessen. This has been funded by the DAAD since January 2015. The department benefits from this partnership through teacher training, guest lecturers and student exchanges. Apart from that, there is a very active ÖSD examination centre, where several hundred students regularly receive a certificate in German.

In addition, the DAAD Lecturer regularly performs marketing and consulting tasks and advises the students during the weekly office hours. Many students plan a master’s degree in Germany and therefore take the opportunity to learn more about their country of study and the conditions for studying in Germany. Additionally a DAAD Lecture organises events where information is given about study and scholarship opportunities in Germany.

Furthermore the DAAD Lecture at Hanoi University is responsible for advising and assisting teachers in conducting scientific research projects. As a representative of Germany, the teachers are supported by lectures in the organisation, conception and realisation of cultural and professional events as well as the giving of further training.

The Faculty of German Linguistics and Literature at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) was founded in 1992.

There are around 400 students on the Bachelor’s degree course at the faculty. The general language training in the first and second years of study is followed by a specialization in tourism, methodology / didactics or office management from the third year onwards. The higher semesters at the Faculty of German Literature and Linguistics are characterized by a combination of practice and theory, with students applying the knowledge they have acquired in practical projects.

The teaching staff of around 15 consists mainly of the faculty’s own graduates and the young teachers design their lessons according to the latest methodological and didactic principles.
There are some long-standing partnerships with Bielefeld University, HTWG Konstanz, TU Dortmund University, Jade University of Applied Sciences in Wilhelmshaven and Khon Kaen University in Thailand.
In 2023, the study program of the German department at USSH was accredited by FIBAA.
Institute partnerships with various German departments in East Asia have also been in place since the end of 2024 as part of the GIP program.

The DAAD already has a long tradition of working at the Faculty of German Literature and Linguistics in Ho Chi Minh City, as lecturers and language assistants have been supporting the department from the very beginning in terms of expertise and through their own teaching activities.

The current lecturer at the German department of USSH teaches students at language level C1 and in office management. The latter was only established at USSH some time ago, which is why the lecturer is responsible for further developing this field of study both in practical and curricular terms together with her colleagues in the German department. Simone Götz also supervises Bachelor’s theses as required and takes part in selection committees for awarding scholarships. A further task is to provide students with appropriate advice regarding their intended Master’s studies in Germany and to present scholarship opportunities. The lecturer also organizes information events at various universities in Ho Chi Minh City to provide information about study and research opportunities in Germany.
